To touch-type is to type without looking at the keyboard — your fingers know where the letters are, so your eyes stay on the screen or on the paper you are copying from. It is a verb: 'She can touch-type.' 'I learned to touch-type in high school.' The noun for the skill is touch-typing, and someone who does it is a touch-typist. The word marks a real difference from what most people do, which is hunt for each key and press it with two fingers — that is called hunt-and-peck. Touch-typing means each finger has its own home key and never leaves its area. It used to be a taught subject with a certificate at the end, and older speakers still treat it as a proper qualification you claim on a résumé. Younger people who grew up with keyboards often type fast without ever having learned the formal method, and they will still say they can touch-type, meaning simply 'I don't look down'. So the word has a little. Speed is not part of the definition, though in practice it is why people learn it.

組成touch + type. Here 'touch' means by feel alone — the same 'touch' as in touchless and touchpad, the sense of knowing something through the fingers rather than the eyes. 'Type' is to press keys on a keyboard, from the metal letter blocks (types) in old printing.
