A rocky hill — specifically a hill with bare rock standing out at the top, often in a strange stacked shape like piled blocks, rising above open grass or with no trees. This is a British word, and a regional one: it belongs above all to Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor in the south-west of England, and to parts of . You will meet it in place names far more often than in ordinary sentences — Hay Tor, Hound Tor, Brent Tor — and in walking guides, maps and novels set in the English countryside. If you are talking about a rocky hill anywhere else in the world, hill or or peak is the word people will expect; tor carries the moor with it. It is countable: one tor, several tors. Note also that Tor spelled with a capital T is something completely different and much more famous today — the anonymous web browser, from The Onion Router — but that is a modern and shares nothing with this old word.

Scholars think it may have come through Celtic — Welsh twr, Cornish tor, Irish tor all sit alongside it — and behind those stands Latin turris, a tower, itself borrowed from Greek. So a tor and a tower may be distant relatives, both meaning something that stands up tall, though the path between them is not fully certain.
