Toronto is the biggest city in Canada and the capital of the province of Ontario. It sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes, and it is where most of Canada's banks, money markets, and big companies keep their head offices.
Toronto多倫多 is是 in Canada加拿大 the biggest city最大的城市, and也是 of the province of Ontario安大略省 the capital的首府。 It它 sits on坐落在 Lake Ontario安大略湖 the north shore of的北岸—— one of the five Great Lakes那是五大湖之一—— and it is where而它也是 most of Canada's banks, money markets, and big companies加拿大大多數的銀行、金融市場和大公司 keep their head offices放總部的地方。
A note on the dictionary line you may read: many books still call it the *second* largest city in Canada, because Montreal was bigger for a long time. Toronto passed it decades ago and is now clearly the largest. Older books have not all caught up.
you may read你可能會讀到的 A note on the dictionary line字典那一行,先說一句: many books很多書 still call it仍然說它是 in Canada加拿大 the second largest city第二大城, because因為 Montreal蒙特婁 for a long time有很長一段時間 was bigger比較大。 Toronto多倫多 decades ago幾十年前 passed it就超過它了, and is now clearly the largest現在明顯是最大的。 Older books比較舊的書 have not all caught up還沒全部跟上。
What English speakers actually think of when they hear *Toronto*: a very mixed city. Something close to half the people living there were born in another country, and you can walk through a few streets and hear five or six languages. There is a large Chinese community, with more than one , so students often know someone who studied or moved there. People also think of the CN Tower, of ice hockey (the Maple Leafs, who do not win), and of basketball (the Raptors, the only team in Canada).
English speakers英語使用者 when they hear Toronto聽到 Toronto 時 What actually think of實際想到的是什麼: a very mixed city一座非常多元混居的城市。 living there住在那裡的人 Something close to half有接近一半 in another country是在另一個國家 were born出生的, and you而你 can walk through a few streets走過幾條街 and hear five or six languages就能聽到五、六種語言。 There is a large Chinese community那裡有很大的華人社群, with more than one Chinatown中國城不只一座, so所以 Taiwanese students台灣學生 often know常常認識 who studied or moved there在那裡讀過書或搬去那裡的 someone人。 People人們 also think of也會想到 the CN TowerCN 塔, of ice hockey冰上曲棍球 (the Maple Leafs, who famously do not win)(楓葉隊,出了名的贏不了), and of basketball和籃球 (the Raptors, the only team in Canada)(暴龍隊,加拿大唯一的一隊)。
Say it carefully, because this is where students give themselves away. Locals do not say all three clearly. It comes out closer to "tuh-RON-oh" or even "TRON-oh" — the second *t* nearly vanishes. Saying "To-RON-TO" very marks you as someone who learned the word from a book.
Say it carefully唸它的時候小心一點, because因為 students學生 this is where常常就是在這裡 give themselves away露餡的。 Locals當地人 do not不會 all three syllables把三個音節都 say clearly清楚唸出來。 It comes out closer to唸出來比較接近 'tuh-RON-oh'tuh-RON-oh or even 'TRON-oh'甚至 TRON-oh—— the second t第二個 t nearly vanishes幾乎消失。 Saying 'To-RON-TO' very neatly把 To-RON-TO 唸得字正腔圓, marks you as會把你標成 who learned the word from a book從書上學這個字的 someone人。
Also: Toronto is not the capital of Canada. That is Ottawa, a much smaller city. This trips up a lot of people, because the biggest city and the capital are the same place in so many countries — but not here, and not in the United States or Australia either.
Also另外: Toronto多倫多 of Canada不是加拿大 is not the capital的首都。 That首都 is Ottawa是渥太華, a much smaller city一座小得多的城市。 This這一點 trips up a lot of people絆倒很多人, because因為 in so many countries在很多國家 the biggest city and the capital最大城和首都 are the same place是同一個地方—— but not here但這裡不是, and not in the United States or Australia either美國和澳洲也不是。
組成From Mohawk tkaronto, "where trees stand in water" — it first named the narrow water between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching, where people drove wooden stakes into the lake bed to trap fish. The name travelled south over time and ended up on the city. Compare Mohawk karón:ta, "tree".
