The forward spinning of a ball. When you brush your or hand upward across the back of a ball as you hit it, the top of the ball rolls forward through the air. That spin makes the ball dip down sooner than you would expect, and then jump forward and upward fast after it bounces. Players love it because it lets them hit very hard and still keep the ball inside the lines. You meet the word most in tennis and table tennis, and also in football, where a topspin shot dips under the crossbar. It is uncountable: "a lot of topspin", "heavy topspin", not "a topspin". The usual verbs are hit with and put on — "he hit it with topspin", "she put topspin on the serve". Its opposite is (also called slice or chop), where the ball spins backwards, floats longer in the air, and then sits low and slows down after the bounce. It is written as one word, topspin, though you will sometimes see top spin in older books.
