1. 1

Backspin is a turning movement in a ball that has been hit so that the top of the ball turns backwards (towards the player) while the ball itself travels forwards. The bottom is turning the other way, towards the direction of travel. That spin makes the ball sit down sooner when it lands; on a table-tennis table it can even come back towards the net after the bounce. put backspin on a shot to stop the ball on the green. Tennis players use it on a slice. You may also hear it as a verb: “He backspun the serve.” It is sports talk, not everyday kitchen English. The opposite feel is topspin, where the top of the ball turns forwards and the ball jumps on after it lands. Though actually, from the stands you often cannot see the spin at all — you only see what the bounce does.
