Topicality is the quality of being topical — of belonging to what people are talking about right now. It is the noun you use when you want to discuss that quality itself rather than describe a thing: 'the topicality of the film', 'the play has lost some of its topicality'. It is a formal, written word. You meet it in reviews, in academic writing, in essays about literature or news, and almost never in a conversation; in speech people just say 'it's very topical' or 'it feels current'. Because it names a quality, it is uncountable. Notice how often it appears with words about time and : gain topicality, lose its topicality, retain its topicality. That is because the quality itself has a short life. In debating — school and university competitions — 'topicality' also has a narrow special sense: an argument that the other team's case does not actually fit the set motion.

組成topical + -ity, a Latin-derived ending that turns an adjective into the name of a quality (as in 'real → reality', 'able → ability'). The -ity ending came into English through Old French -ite from Latin -itās.
