    Very successful or very — belonging to the best group in a field. A top-flight surgeon, a top-flight law firm, a top-flight goalkeeper. In British sport, "the top flight" also works as a noun for the highest division of a league: a club that wins promotion "reaches the top flight". That noun use is very common in football writing and is worth knowing if you read match reports. The adjective sounds a little — it is what a newspaper says, more than what a friend says at dinner. Note it is about level and ability, not about being expensive or beautiful; a top-flight mechanic may work in a very plain garage.
