    Showing a lot of teeth. It is used almost always about a smile or a grin: a toothy smile is a wide one where the teeth are on show. The feeling depends on who is smiling. On a happy child or a friendly host it sounds warm and open. On a salesman, a politician, or someone you do not trust, writers use it to hint that the smile is too big to be honest — all teeth, no heart. It can also describe an animal or a person whose teeth are large or stick out a little, and then it is , so be careful using it about a real person's face. The word is common in stories and news writing, less common in everyday talk, where people just say "a big smile".
