Tombstoning is jumping off something high — a cliff, a pier, a harbour wall, a bridge — straight down into the sea or a river, for fun. The name comes from the shape your body makes in the air: you go in feet first, stiff and straight up and down, like a tombstone standing in the ground. It is mostly a young people's word, and it is mostly a British one — you hear it on the news there every summer, usually because someone was badly hurt. That is worth knowing, because the word almost never comes without that shadow. Newspapers and police use it as a warning word, not a sports word: nobody says 'tombstoning' to praise a jump. Real cliff diving, done from a known height into known water, gets called 'cliff diving' or just 'diving'. 'Tombstoning' is what people call it when the water is a strange depth, the tide has gone out, there are rocks nobody checked, and someone jumps anyway. So the word already carries the opinion inside it.
