A toga is the clothing of ancient Rome: one very large piece of cloth, no buttons and no sewing, wrapped around the body and draped over one shoulder. Roman men wore it over a tunic; it was the mark of a citizen, and different colours meant different things, so it was closer to a uniform than to ordinary daily clothes. Today you almost never talk about a real toga. The word survives in two living places. One is history class. The other is the toga party — an American university party where students wrap themselves in bedsheets to look Roman; if you hear toga from a young English speaker, it is usually this. From that comes the joking use for any loose draped clothing: he came downstairs wrapped in a toga means he was wearing a sheet or a big towel. In the Philippines and Indonesia, toga also means the gown worn at a graduation, because it looks like the Roman one — but English speakers elsewhere do not use it that way and would be confused by it.
