Tonga is a country in the South Pacific Ocean, made up of about 170 small islands, though people only live on around 36 of them. The capital city is Nuku'alofa, and about a hundred thousand people live in the whole country. Tonga is special for two reasons that are worth knowing. First, it has a king — a real king with real power, not just a king for show — and it is the only Pacific island nation that was never fully made into a colony by a European country. Second, because of where it sits on the map, it is one of the first places on earth to see each new day, so sometimes call their home 'the land where time begins'. In English you say 'Tonga' with no 'the' in front: 'She is from Tonga', not 'from the Tonga'. Many students meet this word for the first time in a news story about rugby, about the sea rising, or about the huge underwater volcano that there in 2022.
組成The name comes from the Tongan word Tonga, which is related to Samoan toga meaning 'southern' — so the name is something like 'the islands to the south'. There is also a completely separate English word 'tonga', spelled the same but a different word, borrowed from Hindi टाँगा (ṭāṅgā), meaning a light horse-drawn cart used in India. That one is rare and is not what this entry is about.
