The noun: the small, teasing thrill itself, or the act of producing it — again, usually sexual. You meet it most in the phrase 'for titillation' or 'cheap titillation', used to attack something: a newspaper prints a story for titillation, a TV show offers nothing but titillation. The word packages up a whole criticism — that the pleasure on offer is shallow, physical, and not worth much. It is uncountable in normal use: 'a lot of titillation', not 'three titillations'. It is formal and slightly cold; you would find it in a review, an opinion column, or a complaint to a broadcaster, never in a chat with friends. The older sense of a light pleasant tickling still exists in careful or humorous writing — 'the titillation of a new flavour' — but readers who know only the modern sense may hear something else.
