A joking name for a small person — usually a short person, and very often a child. It is British, quite old-fashioned now, and you hear it most from older people. Almost always it is friendly: a father calls his little son 'titch', a teacher uses it for the smallest boy in the class, and the boy may even like it as a kind of pet name. But it is a comment on someone's body, so it can hurt. Said by a stranger, or said in a hard voice, or said to someone who already feels bad about being short, the same word is an insult. The person cannot change the thing you are pointing at, and that is what makes it sting. Spelling moves around: you will see 'titch' and 'tich', and the person is sometimes called 'Titch' with a capital letter, like a nickname. Americans mostly do not use this word at all.

It comes from a stage name: a very short British music-hall comedian in the 1880s performed as 'Little Tich', and he was so famous that his name became a word for any small person. Some people think an old English word 'ticcen', meaning a young goat, may also have pushed the word along.
