Tipp-Ex is the white liquid you paint over a mistake on paper so you can write on top of it again. It comes in a small bottle with a brush in the lid, or as a pen, or as a little tape roller you drag across the line. Strictly speaking Tipp-Ex is a brand name — a German company's product — but in Britain and Ireland people use it for any brand of the stuff, the way many people say a tissue is a Kleenex. In American English the same thing is called Wite-Out or, more generally, correction fluid. If you are writing carefully or in an exam-type context, 'correction fluid' is the safe neutral term. Two things about the spelling. It has two p's and a hyphen: Tipp-Ex. And because it is a brand, it takes a capital T — though once people started using it as an ordinary word, and as a verb, the capital often drops away and you see 'tippex' in casual writing. This is a word you will hear in a British classroom or office far more than you will read it. It also carries a small feeling with it: reaching for the Tipp-Ex means you made a mistake you could not just cross out neatly, and older teachers often had opinions about students using too much of it.
