A timeshare is a holiday property — usually an apartment or a resort unit — that is owned by many people at once, each of whom has the right to use it for a fixed period every year, often one or two particular weeks. So the thing you buy is not really the flat; it is your slot in the calendar. The word covers both the property itself ('they own a timeshare in Kenting') and the arrangement ('we bought into a timeshare'). It also works as an adjective — a timeshare apartment, a timeshare contract — and occasionally as a verb, though that is uncommon. It matters that the word carries baggage. Timeshares were sold very aggressively from the 1970s onwards, often at high-pressure presentations offering a free gift or free meal, and many buyers found the yearly maintenance fees hard to escape and the contracts nearly impossible to sell on. Because of that history, 'timeshare' in English often arrives with a faint warning attached; 'a timeshare salesman' is close to a joke about pushy selling. Written timeshare or time-share.
