A tightwad is a person who hates spending money — the noun for the kind of person you would describe as tight-fisted. It is American in origin and still feels American, and it is clearly informal: you say it among friends, not in a report. It carries a mocking, slightly joking tone. Calling someone a tightwad is an insult, but usually a light one, the sort of thing said to a friend who will not put in his share of the bill; said coldly about a boss or a landlord it bites harder. People also use it about themselves, half-proudly ('I'm a bit of a tightwad, I bring my own coffee to work'), which is something you can do with 'tightwad' more comfortably than with 'miser'. 'Miser' sounds like a sad old story-book figure counting gold alone; 'tightwad' sounds like an ordinary annoying person. British speakers are more likely to say 'skinflint' or just 'tight'.
