A small, sudden movement of a muscle that a person cannot stop — most often in the face, like an eye hard again and again, or a corner of the mouth pulling. The key idea is 'not on purpose': a tic happens to you, you do not decide it. Tics often get stronger when someone is tired or nervous. Some people have them for a short time only; for others they are part of a medical condition, and doctors talk about vocal tics too, where the sudden thing is a sound rather than a movement. English also uses 'tic' more loosely for a habit someone repeats without noticing — a speaker who says 'you know' every ten seconds has a verbal tic, a writer who always starts with 'So,' has a tic. That looser use is common in writing about people's style, and it is usually gentle, not cruel — though calling someone's real medical tic a 'habit' would be , because they cannot choose to stop.
