A throwback is something that looks or feels like it came from an earlier time. A café with old wooden chairs and a paper menu is a throwback to the 1970s; a manager who still refuses email is a throwback to an earlier way of working. It is normally used with 'to': a throwback to the eighties, a throwback to my childhood. The tone depends completely on who is speaking. Said , it means charming and old-fashioned in a good way. Said , it means out of date and out of place — and when it is used about a person's attitudes, it is usually an insult. There is also a technical use in biology: an animal or plant showing a feature its distant had but its parents did not. And on social media, 'throwback' has grown a life of its own — people post an old photo with #tbt, Throwback Thursday, and young speakers happily say 'a throwback photo' for any old picture, which is looser than the dictionary meaning.
