    Thrift is the habit of using money (and things) carefully so that nothing is wasted. It is not the same as being mean or stingy — those words mean you will not spend, and they are insults. Thrift means you spend WELL: you repair the shoe instead of buying new ones, you finish the food in the fridge, you buy the cheaper thing when it is just as good. English treats it as a virtue, especially in older and more religious writing, and it has a grandmother-ish, wartime, make-do-and-mend feeling. The most common place you will actually see the word today is "thrift shop" or "thrift store" — American English for a second-hand shop (British English says charity shop). "" is the adjective. The word's roots are surprising and worth knowing: it comes from "thrive." It first meant prosperity — the RESULT — and only later turned into the careful habit that gets you there.

組成From Old Norse þrift "thriving, prosperity," built on the verb thrive + a -t ending. So originally "the state of thriving," then the carefulness that produces it.
