A therm is a unit for measuring heat energy, used above all for natural gas. When a gas company works out your bill, it measures the volume of gas you burned and converts it into therms, because what you are really buying is heat, not space. One therm is 100,000 British thermal units — roughly the heat you would get from burning about 100 cubic feet of natural gas. So a bill might read "42 therms at $1.30 per therm". You mainly meet this word in Britain and the United States, on gas bills and in energy news; in Taiwan gas is billed by the cubic metre (立方公尺) and electricity by the kilowatt-hour (度), so the word is unfamiliar here. Though actually, for a the value of "therm" is not the unit itself but the piece it shares with many words you already half-know — it is the Greek word for heat, sitting in the open.

組成From Ancient Greek thermós, "hot, heat". The same piece appears at the start of many science words as thermo-, and at the end as -thermic.
