A bottle or container with a special double wall that keeps what is inside at its own temperature — hot drinks stay hot for hours, cold drinks stay cold. Workers carry one with tea or coffee; families take one on trips; students bring soup to school in the wide-mouthed kind. Strictly speaking, Thermos is a brand name, which is why you often see it with a capital T, and the general word is 'vacuum flask' (British) or just 'insulated bottle'. But the brand became so common that most people now use 'a thermos' with a small t for any bottle of this kind, the way people say 'a Band-Aid' for any sticky plaster. Both spellings are normal; a careful writer capitalises it when talking about the actual company. In everyday speech people also say 'a flask' in Britain, and Americans often just say 'a thermos'.
組成From Ancient Greek θερμός (thermós) 'hot, warm'. The company chose the Greek word for 'hot' as its trademark, and the trademark then became the everyday name for the object.
