Terylene is a light, strong man-made cloth — a polyester fibre. It does not crease much, dries quickly, and keeps its shape, which is why it was used for shirts, school uniforms, trousers, curtains and sails. The important thing to know is that it is a brand name, not a general word for the material, and that it belongs to a particular time and place: it was developed in Britain in the 1940s and was everywhere in British and Commonwealth life from the 1950s to the 1970s. Because it is a trade name, it is usually written with a capital T, though people who used it daily often wrote it small. Today the word sounds dated to a British ear — a word your grandmother would use — and the same material is now simply called polyester. In America the equivalent brand was Dacron, so American speakers may not recognise Terylene at all. You are most likely to meet it in older books, old clothing labels, and in sailing, where Terylene rope and Terylene sails are still said.
