Polyethylene is a light, strong plastic. Thin shopping bags, the film people wrap leftovers in, squeeze bottles, and the crinkly sheet over a sofa are often this. In science class and on packaging it is to PE. Though actually, almost nobody at a stall says “a polyethylene bag” — they say plastic bag — but the full word turns up on labels, in chemistry, and in talk about waste. It is a factory material, not a cloth fibre. The poly- here means “many”: the plastic is made of long chains of a small piece called ethylene, joined over and over.
