A televangelist is a preacher whose church is the television. They appear regularly on TV to persuade people to become Christian — usually in an emotional, style, often in front of a big audience, and very often asking viewers to phone in or post in money to support the ministry. The word is American in flavour and belongs mostly to the 1970s . It carries a doubtful, slightly mocking feeling: an ordinary priest or pastor on a TV programme would not normally be called a televangelist, but a preacher with a big , a private plane and a phone number on the screen certainly would be. Some famous ones were caught in money and sex scandals, and that memory sits inside the word. So use it carefully about a real person — it is not simply a neutral job title like "pastor".
