1. 1

A teleprinter is an old machine that looks like a typewriter joined to a phone line. Someone types a message on a machine in one city, and your machine, far away, prints that message out on paper by itself, the keys moving with nobody sitting there. Before fax and email, this was how news agencies, offices, airports, police stations and armies sent written messages quickly over long distances. It is a British word; Americans usually said 'teletype' or 'teletypewriter'. You will now meet it almost only in history — in old films, in news programmes that use the clattering sound as a signal that something urgent is arriving, and in phrases like 'the news came in on the teleprinter'. There is one place it lives on: teleprinters were adapted as text phones for deaf users, and in Britain 'teleprinter' or 'textphone' can still refer to that.
