A method of making colour films, used in cinemas. It was a company's trade name, first registered in 1916, and it was the process behind the big colour films of the 1930s to 1950s — The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind are the famous examples. Because early Technicolor made colours look stronger and more glowing than real life, the name came to stand for that look itself: bright, rich, almost too colourful.
So you meet it two ways. Technically: "the film was shot in Technicolor" — a fact about how it was made. And figuratively, as an adjective: "a Technicolor sunset", "Technicolor dreams" — meaning something so coloured it feels like a film. The second use is much more common now, since the process itself is history.
Being a trade name, it takes a capital T, though in the figurative use writers often drop it. British writers spell it "".
