A meeting, open to anyone who wants to come, where people talk and listen and learn about one subject — usually a subject that people are angry or worried about right now. Teachers, students and speakers give short talks, people ask questions, and it can run for hours. It is deliberately informal: no exam, no register, no fee, often held in a university hall or even outdoors. The word comes from American student in the 1960s — the first ones were about the war in Vietnam — so it still carries a faint feeling of protest and of learning as a public act rather than a private one. You will meet it mostly in news writing about universities and campaigns. Note the , and note that the plural is teach-ins.

組成teach + -in. The -in ending was borrowed from sit-in, the 1960s protest where people sat down somewhere and refused to move; it later gave English be-in, love-in and others. Here it turns the action into a public gathering.
