Tayside is an area in the east of Scotland, named after the River Tay, which is the longest river in Scotland. The biggest city there is Dundee, and Perth is the other well-known town. Here is the part a dictionary often leaves out: Tayside was an official local government region from 1975 until 1996, and then it was broken up into three smaller councils — Dundee City, Angus, and Perth and Kinross. So it is not really an official place on the map any more. People still use the name, though: Police Scotland's Tayside division, NHS Tayside for the hospitals, and older who grew up with the name. If you meet the word in a news story or an address, it means roughly 'the Dundee and Perth part of eastern Scotland'. Being a place name, it takes a capital T and no 'the' — you say 'in Tayside', not 'in the Tayside'.
