A taxonomist is a scientist whose job is to sort living things into groups and give them names. When someone finds a beetle nobody has written about before, a taxonomist decides which family it belongs to, what to call it in Latin, and how it is related to the beetles we already know. Most taxonomists work on plants, animals, fungi, or very small living things, and much of the work happens in museums and herbariums with dead specimens in drawers, not out in the jungle. The word is also used more loosely outside biology: a person who builds a system of categories for anything — books in a library, products in a shop's website, kinds of illness — can be called a taxonomist, and in computer and web work this is now a real job title. A small thing worth knowing: taxonomists argue a lot. Two of them can look at the same animal and one says it is a separate species while the other says it is only a local type of a species we already know. So when you read that a taxonomist 'decided' something, it usually means a group of scientists slowly came to agree, not that one person announced the answer.
