A biologist is a person who studies living things, or whose job is in that science. Biology is the subject; the biologist is the human being who does the work. Some watch animals in the wild. Some grow cells in a lab. Some work on plants, the sea, insects, or genes. The word is the ordinary, respectful job title — not slang, not a joke. A school biology teacher may or may not call themselves a biologist; the title fits most clearly when the person’s work is the science itself. Though actually many biologists are quite specialised, and then a narrower name steps in: a for plants, a for animals. Those people are still biologists. You will see the word on university doors, in nature films, and in news about health or the living world.

由 biology「生物學」加 -ist「…家」組成。
組成biology (the study of living things: Ancient Greek bios “life” + -logy “study”) + -ist (a person who does that work). The person-ending travelled Greek -istēs → Latin -ista → French -iste → English -ist.
