Tax-free means no tax is charged on something at all. You keep the whole amount, or you pay only the price on the label with nothing added. It works two ways. It can describe money you receive — a tax-free allowance, tax-free interest, a tax-free scholarship — meaning the government does not take a share. And it can describe things you buy: the tax-free shop at the airport, where the usual sales tax or import tax is not added because you are taking the goods out of the country. In many countries a certain amount of income each year is tax-free, and you only start paying on the money above that line. It is used both in front of a noun (tax-free income) and after the verb (the first part of your salary is tax-free). It can even work like an adverb — you can earn a certain amount tax-free. The word sounds like a gift, and often it really is a rule meant to help people with small incomes or to encourage saving, but be a little careful with advertisements: shops and airports use 'tax-free' as a selling word, and the final price is not always lower than at home once you compare properly.
