Tatt is a short, casual way of saying tattoo — the picture or writing permanently marked into someone's skin. It is spoken slang, mostly British and Australian, and you also see it constantly in tattoo shops' social media and in comments online: 'nice tatt', 'getting my first tatt on Saturday'. You will meet it spelled both ways, tatt and tat, with tat being the more common spelling in America and tatt more common in Britain; both are said the same. The register is very informal and quite friendly — it is the word of someone comfortable in that world, not a technical term. In any careful writing, interview, or when speaking to someone older or in a formal setting, say tattoo. Be aware of one trap: in British English, 'tat' with one t also means cheap, ugly, worthless stuff — 'the shop was full of tourist tat'. That is a completely different word that happens to sound the same, and it is rude. So context does the work: 'I love your tat' is a compliment about skin art; 'it's all tat' is calling things junk.
