As a noun, a tasting is an organised event where you try small amounts of several different foods or drinks to compare them and decide what you like. A wine tasting is the classic one — you get a little in the glass, you try it, you move to the next. But you will also see a whisky tasting, a tea tasting, a coffee tasting, a cheese tasting, an olive oil tasting. Two things make it a tasting rather than a meal: the portions are small on purpose, and the point is comparing, not filling your stomach. It is countable — 'we went to a tasting', 'they hold three tastings a month'. Restaurants also use a related phrase you will see on menus here: a tasting menu (品嚐套餐), a long series of very small courses chosen by the chef. And in wine and coffee shops, tasting notes means the written description of what a drink tastes like. Of course, tasting is also just the -ing form of the verb taste, and that is the meaning you meet most: 'I'm tasting the soup to see if it needs salt', 'this soup is tasting better now' — though careful, taste is one of those senses verbs, so 'it tastes good' is far more normal than 'it is tasting good'.
