The taskbar is the long thin strip along one edge of a computer screen — usually the bottom — that shows you what is open and lets you switch between things. On Windows it holds the Start button at one end, small pictures for the programs you are running or have pinned there, and at the other end the clock, the sound and wifi symbols, and the little notification icons. Click one of those small pictures and that window jumps to the front. The word belongs to Windows above all; that is where the name comes from and where people use it most. A Mac has two things doing roughly the same job — the Dock at the bottom and the menu bar at the top — and Mac users normally call them by those names, though in casual speech people do say 'taskbar' for any strip of this kind. It is written as one word. You will meet it in instructions and help pages more than in conversation: 'right-click the icon in the taskbar', 'the app is still running in the taskbar.'
