1. 1

Someone who is tanorexic keeps tanning — lying in the sun, or paying to lie under a sunbed — and cannot seem to stop, even though they know it damages the skin and raises the risk of skin cancer. The word is used two ways: as an adjective ("she's a bit tanorexic") and as a noun for the person ("he's a tanorexic"). It is a joke word, made by mixing "tan" with "anorexic", and the joke is about how the person sees themselves: just as someone with anorexia can look in the mirror and still feel too big, a tanorexic can be very brown already and still feel too pale. It is informal, mostly British, and you meet it in magazines, gossip about celebrities, and friends teasing each other — not in medical writing. Doctors have their own word for the real condition, tanning addiction or tanorexia. Because it borrows a serious illness for a laugh, some people find it , so it is safer used about yourself than about someone else. Note that it is not simply "a person with a dark tan" — the word points at the wanting, not the colour.

    曬黑成癮的(人);台灣多半直接說「曬太陽曬上癮」「狂曬黑的人」。這是英美(尤其英國)的玩笑用語,戲仿 anorexic(厭食症的),重點在「明知傷皮膚還停不下來」,不是單純指皮膚很黑。台灣以白為美,很少有對應的常用詞,理解概念比背譯法重要。

組成A blend of two words squeezed together: tan (to make the skin brown in the sun) + anorexic (having anorexia, an illness where a person eats too little because they see their own body wrongly). The second word supplies the ending -orexic and, more importantly, the idea of a self-image that never matches the mirror.
