Tanorexia is a joking, informal word for wanting to be tanned so badly that you keep sitting in the sun or using sunbeds even though you know it is hurting your skin and raising your risk of skin cancer. The person described often already looks very dark to everyone else, but still thinks they look pale — that between what they see and what others see is the heart of the word. The person is called tanorexic, and the adjective form is more common than the noun. It is not a real medical diagnosis; doctors would talk about tanning dependence or a body image disorder instead. Because it is a joke word, the tone matters a lot. Friends use it teasingly, and magazines use it about celebrities with orange skin. But it borrows its shape from anorexia, a serious and sometimes fatal illness, so some people find it careless or . Use it lightly among friends, not in an essay or in front of someone who is really struggling.

    曬黑成癮、日曬癮(明知傷皮膚還是一直曬太陽或做日光浴的人)。這是口語的玩笑話,不是正式的醫學診斷;形容人時說 tanorexic。中文沒有固定對應詞,通常直接描述:「曬太陽曬到上癮」。

組成A blend: tan + anorexia. The joke copies the shape of anorexia, where a person sees themselves as bigger than they are; here, the person sees themselves as paler than they are. Note that the parts of anorexia (Greek an- "without" + orexis "appetite") carry no meaning here — the word was borrowed whole, for its sound and its idea, not built from its pieces.
