Tanorexia is a joking, informal word for wanting to be tanned so badly that you keep sitting in the sun or using sunbeds even though you know it is hurting your skin and raising your risk of skin cancer. The person described often already looks very dark to everyone else, but still thinks they look pale — that mismatch between what they see and what others see is the heart of the word. The person is called tanorexic, and the adjective form is more common than the noun. It is not a real medical diagnosis; doctors would talk about tanning dependence or a body image disorder instead.
