A tanner is a person whose job is turning raw animal skins into leather. The work means the hides in strong-smelling liquids for days or weeks so the skin will not rot and becomes soft enough to make shoes, bags, and belts. For most of history this was hard, dirty, bad-smelling work, and tanners' workshops were pushed to the edge of a town or of it — which is one reason Tanner became a common family surname in English, like Smith or Baker. Today the word mostly appears when people talk about traditional crafts, leather factories, or history; you would rarely meet a tanner at a party in . Two other uses are worth knowing. In old British slang, a tanner meant a coin — you will meet it in old novels and films, and it is dead in modern speech. And in everyday modern talk, tanner sometimes means a machine or a spray for making skin brown — a sunbed or a bottle of self-tanner — though people usually say "self-tanner" or "fake tan" to be clear.
組成tan (to turn hide into leather) + -er (a person who does this job) — the same person-making -er as in teacher, farmer, or baker. The tan part goes back through Old English tannian to the oak-bark acid used in the process. The coin sense probably comes from a different place altogether: it is often said to be named after John Sigismund Tanner, an engraver at the Royal Mint in the 1700s who designed a sixpence.
