A tallboy is a tall wooden chest of drawers — narrow, standing high, with the drawers stacked one above another, sometimes six or seven of them. You keep clothes in it: shirts, socks, folded things. The point of the shape is floor space. A normal chest of drawers is wide and low; a tallboy holds the same clothes but goes upward instead of sideways, so it fits in a bedroom corner or beside a wardrobe. The word is more British than American; Americans are more likely to say 'highboy' or just 'a tall dresser'. It also sounds a bit old-fashioned and a bit like the language of antique shops and furniture catalogues — an ordinary person today might well just say 'a chest of drawers'. Some tallboys are really two chests, one set on top of the other, and older ones often have short legs and a top. Note that 'tallboy' has other meanings in other corners of English — a tall can of beer in some countries, and a large bomb used in the Second World War — but the furniture is the meaning you will meet in a dictionary of everyday English.

But the 'boy' part probably did not start as a word for a child — it seems to have been copied from 'lowboy', an older name for a low piece of furniture, where that ending may go back to French 'bois', meaning 'wood'. So the 'boy' may really be 'wood' in disguise. Scholars are not fully certain here, so take it as a likely story rather than a fact.
