A tactician is a person who is good at planning the small, concrete moves that win a fight, a game, or an argument. The word is close to 'strategist', and people often mix them, but there is a real difference worth keeping.

A tactician is a persontactician指的是一個人 who is good at planning the small, concrete moves很擅長規劃那些具體的小動作 that win a fight, a game, or an argument藉此贏得一場戰鬥、比賽或爭論。The word is close to 'strategist'這個字跟'strategist'(戰略家)意思很接近, and people often mix them大家常常把兩者搞混, but there is a real difference worth keeping但其實有一個值得分清楚的真正差別。

A strategist decides the big aim — which war to fight, which market to enter. A tactician decides the moves on the day — where to put the players, when to attack, which question to ask first. So a tactician works inside a shorter time and a smaller space.

A strategist decides the big aimstrategist決定的是大方向 — which war to fight, which market to enter要打哪一場仗、要進入哪個市場。A tactician decides the moves on the daytactician決定的是當下的每一步動作 — where to put the players, when to attack, which question to ask first球員要放在哪個位置、什麼時候進攻、要先問哪個問題。So a tactician works所以tactician是在運作 inside a shorter time and a smaller space比較短的時間跟比較小的範圍裡。

You will meet the word most in three places: the military (a general who is a fine tactician), sport (football and basketball writers love it, especially about coaches), and chess and other games. It also gets used about politicians, and there it is a little bit two-sided: calling a politician 'a brilliant tactician' can quietly mean 'clever at winning today, but with no big plan'.

You will meet the word most in three places你最常在三個地方遇到這個字: the military (a general who is a fine tactician)軍事(形容一位很厲害的將領是'a fine tactician'), sport (football and basketball writers love it, especially about coaches)體育(足球和籃球的評論常用,尤其在講教練時), and chess and other games還有西洋棋跟其他棋類遊戲。It also gets used about politicians它也會用在政治人物身上, and there it is a little bit two-sided但在那個語境裡帶點雙面意味: calling a politician 'a brilliant tactician'說一個政治人物是'a brilliant tactician' can quietly mean 'clever at winning today, but with no big plan'可能暗指「很會贏眼前這一局,但沒什麼大方向」。

The word is fairly formal — you read it in newspapers and books more than you hear it in a café. It is almost always used with a good word in front, like 'a shrewd tactician', 'a master tactician', 'a fine tactician'. There is no common negative version; if someone is bad at this, people just say they are a poor tactician, and that sounds a bit odd, so they usually say something else instead.

The word is fairly formal這個字相當正式 — you read it in newspapers and books more than you hear it in a café你在報紙、書裡讀到它的機會,比在咖啡廳聽到的機會多。It is almost always used with a good word in front它幾乎總是搭配一個正面的形容詞, like 'a shrewd tactician', 'a master tactician', 'a fine tactician'像'a shrewd tactician'(精明的謀略家)、'a master tactician'(謀略大師)、'a fine tactician'(出色的謀略家)。There is no common negative version沒有常見的負面說法; if someone is bad at this如果有人不擅長這個, people just say they are a poor tactician大家頂多說他是'a poor tactician', and that sounds a bit odd但聽起來有點怪, so they usually say something else instead所以通常會改用別的說法。

組成tactic (a planned move to get an advantage) + -ian (a person who does this, or is skilled at it). The -ian ending is the same one in musician, magician, historian, electrician — it turns a field into the person who works in it. The root goes back through French to a Greek word about arranging and ordering things, which fits: a tactician is someone who arranges.
