When one word is "synonymous with" another, the two words mean almost the same thing, like "big" and "large." But the more common everyday use is a bit different: when a person, place, or thing becomes "synonymous with" an idea, it means people always think of that idea when they think of that thing - the two are so closely linked in people's minds that they feel like the same thing, like "her name became synonymous with success."
