Symmetric means having two halves that match each other perfectly, like a mirror image — if you folded it in the middle, both sides would line up exactly. It's used for shapes, faces, patterns, and buildings, and also in math and science for things that balance in a more abstract way. The more common everyday word is actually 'symmetrical' — 'symmetric' shows up a bit more in math, science, and technical writing.
