A swordfish is a big sea fish whose upper jaw grows long, flat and pointed, like a sword sticking out from its face. They are large — often two or three metres including the 'sword' — fast , and live in warm oceans. People fish for them for sport and for food; swordfish steak is a firm, meaty fish you can cook like a piece of pork or beef rather than a delicate fillet, and it is served in restaurants in Taiwan too. Note the plural: it is usually 'swordfish', not 'swordfishes' — 'we caught three swordfish'. Do not mix it up with the sailfish or the marlin, which also have pointed bills; the swordfish's bill is flat and blade-like, and it has no big sail-shaped fin on its back.
組成sword + fish — 'the fish with a sword'. The word is very old; it was already swerdfysche in Middle English and sweordfisc in Old English, so English speakers have been calling it this for over a thousand years.
