Sweden is a country in northern Europe, on the eastern side of the peninsula, next to Norway and Finland. Its capital is Stockholm, and about ten million people live there. It is a member of the European Union but keeps its own money, the . English speakers usually mention Sweden for a few reasons: the long dark winters and short bright summers; the high taxes that pay for free healthcare, free university, and long paid leave for new parents, which people call the Swedish model or Swedish welfare; and its companies and culture that reached everywhere — , Volvo, Spotify, . 組成English borrowed this from Dutch and Scots forms of the name. At first it meant the people, and only from the late 1600s did it settle into being the name of the country. It pushed out the older English names Swēoland, literally 'Swede land', and Swēorīċe, 'Swede kingdom'.
