A swede is a large round root vegetable with rough purple-and-yellow skin and firm orange-yellow flesh inside. It grows underground, tastes slightly sweet and a bit peppery, and is usually peeled, boiled, and mashed, or cut into soups and stews. It is winter food, cheap food, and in Britain it is strongly tied to Scottish cooking, where mashed swede is served with and called 'neeps'. This is the British word. Americans call the same vegetable a , and if you say swede in the United States most people will not know what you mean. A swede is bigger, harder, and yellower than a , though shops and cooks mix the two names up constantly, and in Scotland and northern England '' often means what the south calls a swede. Written with a capital S, Swede is a completely different word: a person from Sweden.
組成Short for 'Swedish turnip'. The plant reached English farms from Sweden in the 1700s, so people first called it the Swedish turnip and then shortened it. That is why it looks like the word for a Swedish person.
