Swashbuckling describes stories, films, or people full of bold sword-fighting adventure — daring, , and done with style. A swashbuckling tale has heroes leaping between ships, duels on staircases, narrow escapes.
The word does two jobs. Most often it points at the story: "a swashbuckling adventure", "swashbuckling romance". But it also points at the manner of a person: someone swashbuckling is fearless in a , cheerful, slightly reckless way. That second use travels well outside old adventure stories. Sports writers love it — "a swashbuckling innings", "swashbuckling attacking football" — meaning play that is bold and thrilling and does not bother with caution. Business writers use it too, for a leader who takes big risks with obvious enjoyment.
The feeling is almost always warm and . Even when it hints that someone is a little too reckless, it does so .
A point of grammar worth knowing: there is no verb "to swashbuckle" in ordinary use. English made the noun first, then trimmed it into this adjective, as if a verb had existed all along.
