A surrey is a light horse-drawn carriage with two rows of seats, facing forward, often with a flat roof and a fringe hanging round the edge. It was a family carriage in America in the late 1800s and early 1900s — the kind you took out for a Sunday ride, not for carrying goods. This is a historical word: nobody owns a surrey today, and you meet it almost only in old American stories, in museums, and in one very famous song, "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top", from the musical Oklahoma! That song is honestly why the word survives at all. So treat it as reading vocabulary. Note that it is spelled with a small s when it means the carriage; with a capital S, Surrey is a county in the south of England, and the carriage was named after it because that style of cart was first made there before Americans took up the design in 1872.
