1. 1

A woman who does a demanding job well AND runs a home and raises children — all at a high level, and usually without much help. The word is a compliment on the surface: you say it about someone whose energy you. "My mother was a superwoman." "She's not a superwoman, you know — she needs help too." But listen to how it is really used and you will hear something else underneath. Very often people say it with a tired or critical tone, because the idea itself is a trap: society expects a woman to be perfect at work and perfect at home, and calls her a hero if she manages it instead of asking why nobody is helping. So you will meet phrases like "the superwoman myth" or "the superwoman syndrome" — these are not praise at all. They name the pressure. A woman might say "I gave up trying to be a superwoman" and she means "I stopped trying to do everything alone." It is an everyday word, not a formal one — common in magazines, in conversation, in newspaper articles about working mothers. It is almost never used about men; the male word "superman" means something different (a very strong or great man, or the comic-book character), because nobody expected a man to do the housework too. That difference is the whole story of the word. Separately, Superwoman with a capital S is a comic-book superhero from DC Comics. The everyday meaning grew out of that image — a woman with impossible powers.

    女超人/超級女強人(能兼顧工作與家庭的女性)。注意:中文的「女強人」多半只講事業成功,superwoman 一定包含「家庭也顧得很好」這一層,這才是重點。這個詞常帶有無奈或諷刺,例如 the superwoman myth(女超人神話)指的是社會要求女性兩邊都做到滿分的壓力。

組成super- + woman. The prefix super- comes from Latin and means "above, beyond, more than normal" — you see it in superhero, supermarket, supersize. So a superwoman is a woman beyond the normal limits. The word follows the comic-book character Superwoman, published by DC Comics from 1943.
