A superstore is a very big shop. It comes in two kinds. One sells almost everything — food, clothes, electronics, garden things — all under one roof, usually out of the town centre with a large car park. The other sells only one kind of thing, but in enormous quantity and choice: a pet superstore, a computer superstore, a toy superstore. Either way the point of the word is size, and behind size, low prices and lots of choice. It is more a British word than an American one; Americans are more likely to say 'superstore' for the everything-under-one-roof kind and often just name the chain. In Taiwan the closest everyday thing is a 量販店 like Costco or Carrefour. There is a quiet story inside the word too: superstores are what people blame when the small shops on the old high street close down, so in newspapers it often appears with a slightly sad or angry flavour.
組成super- (above the normal size, extra big) + store (a shop). 'Store' traces back through Old French to Latin instaurare 'to renew, to stock up' — a store was first the supply you kept, and only later the building you keep it in.
