A superstar is a performer who is not just famous but famous everywhere — the top level, known to people who do not even follow that field. Usually a singer, a film actor, or a top athlete. Your grandmother has heard of them.
The word marks a step above star. A star is well known within their world; a superstar has escaped it. That is why people argue about who deserves the word — it claims something bigger than "popular".
It has a second, kinder use in everyday life: calling an ordinary person a superstar to praise them . "You fixed the printer? You're a superstar." This is friendly, a bit British-sounding, and very common at work and among friends. Do not confuse it with the first meaning — nobody thinks the printer person is actually famous.
組成super- + star. super- comes from Latin super, "above, over". star is old native English — Old English steorra, from an ancient root that also gave Latin stella and Greek astēr. Calling a famous performer a "star" is the older picture; super- pushes it one level higher.
