Superscript describes a small number or letter set high, above the line of normal writing — the little 2 in x², the little 3 in m³, the small number that points you to a footnote. It works both as an adjective ("a superscript number") and as a noun ("put a superscript after the word"). You meet it in maths, science, and anywhere with footnotes, and in word processors it is the name of a button. It is a technical, practical word — nobody uses it as a picture for anything else. Its opposite is subscript: small and set low, like the 2 in H₂O. Same idea, other direction. Learning the pair together is easier than learning either alone.

組成super- "above" + script "something written" (from Latin scribere, to write). So, literally: written above. It came into English through Middle French superscript, from Latin superscriptus.
